This week I attended the Wesleyan Investment Office information session for their Summer 2023 Internship opportunity. This caught my attention while looking through Handshake because I’m interested in how the endowment is managed, maintained, and grown. Wesleyan deals in many different types of assets, and all members within the department deal with all asset classes. This particular opportunity is also appealing because it would be very hands-on, with opportunities to meet with a variety of different people, and allows for meaningful connections to be built with both Wesleyan staff and external associates.
Also, there are opportunities for both independent and group work which is my preferred work style. The experience culminates in a capstone project of the student’s choosing which is also an appealing factor. The capstone project would be an amazing opportunity to explore an intriguing sector of investment finance and could potentially open more internship opportunities.
I’m going to apply for this position, although my chances of getting it seem slim. Should I not be selected this year, I can always reapply next year Nevertheless, I’m going to update my resume and prepare the other components of the application. I’ve scheduled a meeting with a career counselor to review my application materials and brainstorm regarding the creative questions for the cover letter.
