Letter to Self – Fall 2022

During this period I want to challenge myself to explore a variety of career opportunities, enhance and expand upon my skills, and become more comfortable with applying to jobs and other career opportunities. I’m committed to expanding my practical skills (i.e. Excel) so that I will be less limited in the types of opportunities that I can pursue. Also with respect to hard skills, I want to learn how to write a cover letter, customize my resume for various jobs, and how to be the most effective in an interview. Godron resources like PCAs and Career Advisors, in addition to resources on Handshake, will be invaluable in achieving these goals. I also intend to use LinkedIn Learning to expand upon these skills.

With regard to career exploration, I’m excited to attend a variety of Gordon Career Center events and discover how Wesleyan Alumni are applying their education and to be exposed to new industries and companies. As of now, I’m interested in learning more about consulting and jobs in finance. I’m currently enrolled in both Consulting Pathways and in the Consulting Pathways student forum, so I will gain a significant amount of exposure during the semester. Ideally, I would like to find a job that challenges and interests me academically but at which I would also be able to support myself financially. Some other values I’m interested in are philanthropy, value-driven companies and organizations, intellectually stimulating, the combination of independent and collaborative work, and potentially a travel component (potentially France given that I’m taking French).

Over the course of this semester, I’m looking to learn more about the opportunities provided through the Gordon Career Center, explore a variety of professional fields, reflect on the types of jobs that interest me, connect with other students and alumni, and build my professional skills. I hope that this course allows me to feel more confident in my career prospects.
